Strolls, Rentals, and Excitement!

In class today, we watched a movie about the colonization of Sydney.  Three or four Aboriginal groups traditionally owned Sydney, but when the British came, they contracted small pox, and their population was greatly decimated.   The women that survived were often kept in institutions or made to work as nannies.  If they fled, they carried the disease further into the outback to other Aboriginal groups.  I also learned the difference between "Aboriginal" and "indigenous".  Indigenous populations include the Aboriginal people and the Torres Strait islanders.  Interesting!

Afterwards, I met with my group to work on our project, and then I left with Lianne and Kate to take a stroll to the train and then walk around from the Town Hall train station.  We didn't really know where we were headed, but we decided to walk and see where we ended up.  We did a little clothing shopping, and I found a super cute dress!  I got to show it off for Lianne and Kate, and got their approval, which was nice.  I came into this knowing no one, and I can now say that I have friends here, which is so nice!  I think the shop I got the dress from is Australian, so I probably won't see it anywhere else.  We also passed by SO many asian food restaurants, and were craving asian food for the rest of the day!  We also ran into a little dvd rental store and rented a couple of Australian films to save for a rainy night this week.  I'm excited to watch them, especially because I won't be able to find them at home!  We used the public restroom in a really sketchy Chinese hotel, but we didn't realize it was sketchy until we got inside a teeny elevator and everything was in Chinese.  But then we got to the fifth floor (whyyy the public restroom was on the fifth floor, I have no idea), and there was a beautiful view of a harbor!  We were taken aback!  Afterwards, we found a bus stop, but after scrutinizing over the map and forgetting that buses drive on the left side of the road, we ended up going in the wrong direction.  At the end of the line, we asked a nice young man for directions to the nearest train station, and it turned out that we were just a couple blocks from the Circular Quay station!  We rode to Central and then caught the M20 to go back to the Meriton.  We stopped by the supermarket and got supplies to make guacamole, which turned out to be DELICIOUS!

We're relaxing before our big day tomorrow!  We're going to the Blue Mountains and to Featherdale Wildlife Park, and I'm SO excited!  I get to see kangaroos and koalas tomorrow, and I can't wait to send your all photos and report back!
