Encounters, Culture, Identity, and Birthdays

Favorite Aussie encounter so far:
The elevator at the Meriton opens on the 8th floor.  I hear, "Ay, this is us, mate", and then one of the two men turns to me and says, "Cheers!"  I smile and enter the elevator, and when the doors close, I realize just how fabulous those words were.

Yesterday, we had three hours of class that focused on culture and identity.  We talked a great deal about what defines Australian culture and identity and how that has affected us while abroad.  We talked about mateship, egalitarianism, and fair go, and how we've noticed them in Australian society.  Afterwards, Sarah, Kelly and I headed to the post office to mail postcards (keep an eye out next week, mom!) and buy stamps before getting on the bus to head back to the Meriton.  I did a bit of schoolwork, and in the evening, every one of us headed to Chinese Laundry to celebrate Joye's birthday.  It was nice to be out with everyone, but quite a few of us left pretty early and retired after ordering a pizza.

Today, we woke up to torrential rain.  We'd made a pact to leave the hotel for Paddington Markets at 10:30am, and we were committed.  We gathered our things and headed to the bus stop.  The rain came down harder.  After ten minutes of contemplating our situation, we decided to get our school things from the room, and find a cafe to do our work in.  So we did.  Now we're sitting in an adorable cafe only a few minutes from the hotel, but we've never been here before.  I ordered my typical chai latte and some hash browns, and I'll probably get lunch in an hour or so.  Lianne's writing her postcards, Kara's working on her leadership paper, and Kate and I are updating our blogs (no way!).  Sarah's reading our assigned book.  The rain is still coming down.
